Detailed Descriptions

Diesel Standby Generators

Diesel standby generators provide electrical back-up for signalling supplies in the event of the loss of the main power supply.

Back-up Signalling Supply (Traction Backed Supply)

Traction-based back-up power supplies provide electrical back-up for signalling supplies in the event of the loss of the main power supply.

Back-up Signalling Supply (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) provide no-break supplies in the event of failure of the main signalling power supplies.

Tunnel Pumping System (Mersey Tunnel System)

Tunnel pumps are used to dewater tunnels, which would otherwise be prone to flooding.

Compressed Air System

Air compressors are used to actuate several trackside mechanisms such as points by providing a supply of compressed atmospheric air to the equipment.  They consist of two compressors (one operational and one stand-by) which are powered by two power supplies (the back-up supply being a stand-by diesel generator).

Emergency Lighting System

The emergency lighting is powered from a main power supply and a secondary back-up, either from a generator, an external electricity supplier or batteries.

The Merseyrail system, quantified in this report, contains battery-backed luminaires.

Hydraulic Lifts

Hydraulic lifts are used to transfer people between the platform and the station concourse levels.

Electric Lifts

Electric lifts are used to transfer people between the platform and the station concourse levels.

Escalators

Escalators are used to transfer people between the platform and the station concourse levels.

Stair Lifts

The function of the stair lift is to allow mobility-impaired passengers to ascend safely and descend the stairs on Railtrack’s infrastructure.

Electric Strip Point Heaters

Point heaters are installed to prevent ice and/or snow from blocking the points by heating the rail in a variety of manners: a first generation of heaters worked with a gas supply which had to be ignited either manually or automatically. The gas supply itself could be town gas or, in remote locations, bottle gas. Gas point heaters are being replaced with electrical point heaters, which rely on a variety of heating elements (pads, cartridges or strips) to heat the rail.

This report covers the strip heater type of electric point heater.

Electric Cartridge Point Heaters

Point heaters are installed to prevent ice and/or snow from blocking the points by heating the rail in a variety of manners: a first generation of heaters worked with a gas supply which had to be ignited either manually or automatically. The gas supply itself could be town gas or, in remote locations, bottle gas. Gas point heaters are being replaced with electrical point heaters, which rely on a variety of heating elements (pads, cartridges or strips) to heat the rail.

This report covers the cartridge type of electric point heater.

Gas Powered Point Heaters

Point heaters are installed to prevent ice and/or snow from blocking the points by heating the rail in a variety of manners:  a first generation of heaters worked with a gas supply which had to be ignited either manually or automatically.  The gas supply itself could be town gas or, in remote locations, bottle gas.  Gas point heaters are being replaced with electrical point heaters, which rely on a variety of heating elements (pads, cartridges or strips) to heat the rail.

This report covers the generic form of gas point heaters. The specific type is the same as the generic form as no types have been specified by Railtrack.

Conductor Rail Traction Delivery System

The system modelled here takes high voltage AC power supplies from the grid, converts this to 750V DC and distributes the supplies to trains via a third rail.

Overhead Line traction Delivery System

The system modelled here takes high voltage AC power supplies from the grid, converts this to 25kV and distributes the supplies to trains via overhead lines.
