Yellow Book Issue 4 has the status of a withdrawn document and does not represent up-to-date guidance for the GB mainline railway. Yellow Book Issue 4 continues to be available for organisations to use if they wish, but all organisations should note that the guidance contained within it no longer aligns with the current regulatory regime that applies to the GB mainline railway system. </p> <p class="style5"> Work is currently underway to provide updated guidance.</p> <p class="style4"> <span lang="en-gb">February 2012:</span></p> <p class="style6"> Yellow Book Issue 4 (YB4) has the status of a withdrawn document. As a result, RSSB will not be producing any more hard copies of YB4. </p> <p class="style6"> Willsons printers will not be distributing hard copies of YB4 from <br /> 4 April 2012. </p> <p class="style6"> Hard copies of YB4 will continue to be available from URS <span lang="en-gb">s</span> offices (location details are provided on the  Yellow Book page of this website) until the stocks run out. However, organisations collecting hard copies of YB4 from URS <span lang="en-gb">s</span> offices should be aware of the caveat above regarding the status of YB4 and RSSB s intentions for the replacement guidance described in the January 2012 news article below. </p> <p class="style6"> YB4 and its associated Application Notes can be downloaded via the links on the  Yellow Book page of this website. </p> <p class="style6"> <b>J</b><span lang="en-gb" class="style7">anuary 2012</span>:</p> <p class="style6"> The meeting of the <a href="http://www.rssb.co.uk/RGS/Pages/INDUSTRYSTANDARDSCO-ORDINATIONCOMMITTEE.aspx"> Industry Standards Coordination Committee</a> (ISCC) on 06 January 2012 discussed the findings of an ISCC sub-group that has been undertaking a project to review the current legal requirements and available guidance for duty holders and others involved in the GB mainline railway system in the area covered by Yellow Book Issue 4 (YB4). </p> <p class="style6"> ISCC endorsed a number of recommendations from the sub-group, including the following: </p> <p class="style6"> a) Adding a caveat to the YB website explaining the current status of YB4. This caveat has been placed in red text at the top of each page of the YB website. <br /> <br /> b) Dissolving the Yellow Book Steering Group (YBSG) and its associated sub-groups. </p> <p class="style6"> Guidance to replace YB4 is being produced that will take the form of:<br /> <br /> i)  Principles level guidance, largely based on Volume 1 of Yellow Book issue 4, which provides a good foundation for understanding engineering safety management. <br /> <br /> ii)  Regulatory level guidance, in the form of a process map that allows organisations to navigate their way through the legislation and available guidance, and provides links to guidance specific to each regulation (for example, ORR&#39;s guidance on the Common Safety Method on risk evaluation and assessment, and the DfT helpnotes on the Railways (Interoperability) Regulations). <br /> <br /> iii) Detailed guidance at the  engineering safety management level will be provided in three areas, namely hazard identification, assessing risk, and reducing risk, in the form of three Rail Industry Guidance Notes. </p> <p class="style6"> Replacement guidance for items i) and ii) will be available on RSSB s website by the end of June 2012. The YB website will contain a link to this guidance.
